Protecting Yourself and Others from the Flu

As flu season approaches, Sutter Health Plan encourages members to get their annual flu vaccine. Covered at no cost to members, the flu shot remains one of the best ways to protect yourself, your family and your community from seasonal influenza.

The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads through coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces. Health experts recommend getting vaccinated each year, ideally between September and November, before flu activity peaks. The California Department of Public Health recommends flu vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older.

“Getting an annual flu shot is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of serious illness and help protect those around you,” said Dr. Robert Bixler, chief medical officer at Sutter Health Plan. “While the flu vaccine cannot guarantee that you won’t get sick, it can significantly reduce the risk of severe complications and hospitalization.”

The flu vaccine is safe during pregnancy and can help protect newborns through shared antibodies. Adults 65 and older, as well as people who have received an organ transplant, should talk with their healthcare provider about whether a high-dose flu vaccine is right for them.

Convenient Ways to Get Vaccinated

Sutter Health Plan members over 6 months old can receive a flu vaccine through several convenient options:

  • Sutter flu vaccine clinics: Members can schedule an appointment through My Health Online or by calling 800-4SUTTER.
  • Network pharmacies: Vaccines are available at participating pharmacies throughout the service area. Members are encouraged to call ahead to confirm availability and appointment requirements.
  • Primary care offices: Members can receive a flu vaccine during a scheduled visit with their primary care physician. While the vaccine is covered at no cost, an office visit copay may apply.
