According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions that last one year or more and require ongoing medical attention, limit daily activities, or both. The CDC reports that 6 in 10 Americans have at least one chronic disease, and 4 in 10 have two or more.
While chronic diseases impact millions, effective management is possible — improving quality of life and helping to prevent further complications.
“The key to successful management starts with understanding the condition,” notes Dr. Bixler, Medical Director at Sutter Health Plan. “Sutter Health Plan offers members the Sutter Health Care Management Program to provide dedicated support, guidance and care coordination to build healthy habits and improve health outcomes.”
In addition to following physician’s recommendations, here are a few tips to enhance overall health:
- Eat a balanced diet: A nutritious diet can help manage and reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Even small dietary changes can make a significant difference.
- Stay active: Physical activity is essential for managing chronic health issues and improving mental well-being. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise per week, or about 22 minutes daily.
- Cut back on alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease and certain cancers. Reducing alcohol intake can lower these risks and improve overall health.
- Get regular screenings: Regular doctor and dentist visits are vital for preventive care and managing chronic conditions. Early detection of health problems can help prevent complications.
- Follow treatment plans: Consistency is crucial in managing chronic conditions. Regularly monitoring health and sticking to the doctor’s treatment plan can help prevent diseases from worsening.
- Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep is linked to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. Adults should aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night to maintain a healthy body and mind.
For anyone living with a chronic condition, taking proactive steps, such as becoming educated about the condition, monitoring one’s health through regular doctor visits and adopting healthy lifestyle habits is crucial to aid in managing the condition.
