Mahmee Doula Care Program

Sutter Health Plan members have access to Mahmee, a leading wraparound maternal healthcare company, to personalize support and improve maternal and infant health outcomes — all at no cost.

Pregnancy and childbirth can bring significant excitement, and stress, to both mind and body. In fact, the United States has the highest rate of maternal mortality and severe childbirth-related complications among all developed nations.

Research shows that adding a doula to the birth team can make a remarkable difference: cesarean rates drop by half, labor tends to be shorter, and the need for pain-relief medication — such as oxytocin and epidurals — decreases dramatically, according to the American Pregnancy Association. These benefits point to the powerful impact of personalized support before, during and after childbirth.

While the healthcare team focuses on medical needs, a doula is dedicated entirely to providing the birthing parent information guidance, emotional support, physical comfort and advocating for their birthing preferences. Doulas can also help families adjust to life with a newborn.

From prenatal check-ins to postpartum coaching, Mahmee provides personalization that brings peace of mind. Through Mahmee, members gain access to an integrated care team of doulas, registered nurses, mental health coaches, nutritionists and care coordinators. The program provides 12 months of comprehensive support, tailored to needs, whether preparing for delivery, managing pregnancy or navigating postpartum.

“At Sutter Health Plan, we believe everyone deserves to feel supported, informed and empowered throughout their entire maternity journey,” said Susan Stephenson, RN, Director of Quality and Patient Safety. “Our partnership with Mahmee reflects our commitment to meeting members where they are — with compassionate, personalized care that extends well beyond the delivery room.”
