Smart Habits for Healthy Skin

May 19, 2026 | 2026, Health and Wellness

The body’s largest organ, skin, weighs about 9 lbs. and covers the entire body. Skin performs many crucial functions, from protecting inner organs to serving as the first line of defense against environmental hazards.

Beyond supporting your immune system, skin also plays an indispensable role in regulating body temperature and providing the sensory experiences that enrich everyday life.

Summertime activities remind us to apply sunscreen, but caring for skin with daily, consistent skincare delivers benefits year‑round. The most effective approach is to research products that address specific skin concerns and pair them with habits that are proven to support overall health.

Healthy skin starts with cleansing:

  • Wash daily and keep your hands clean.
  • Avoid harsh soaps, detergents and hot water to protect the skin’s natural barrier.
  • Shave carefully, then gently pat skin dry.
  • After washing, apply moisturizer to help maintain hydration.

Protection from the sun is essential:

  • Use a waterproof, broad‑spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 90 minutes or after swimming, sweating or toweling off.
  • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, lightweight pants, wide‑brimmed hats and UV‑blocking sunglasses to limit sun exposure.
  • Avoid tanning beds, sunlamps and other artificial sources of UV radiation.

Fortify your skin from the inside out:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
  • Staying well‑hydrated by drinking water consistently throughout the day.
  • Limit added sugars, refined carbohydrates and processed foods.
  • Sleep at least seven hours each night to support both physical and mental health.
  • Exercise at least 150 minutes per week.

Stress can negatively affect skin, increase sensitivity and trigger breakouts. Managing stress by practicing mindfulness and making time for hobbies supports both skin health and overall well‑being. Sutter Health Plan members have the option to self-refer for in-network office or virtual visits for mental health services through Carelon Healthcare Services.

The American Cancer Society and other health experts recommend monthly self‑exams to help detect skin cancer early. Experts also agree that avoiding tobacco is essential — smoking narrows blood vessels in the outer layers of skin, restricting blood flow and limiting the skin of vital nutrients and oxygen.
