It’s Men’s Health Month

June is National Men’s Health Month and this year’s theme focuses on closing the Empathy Gap by advocating and raising awareness of men’s physical and mental health challenges.

At Sutter Health Plan, we recognize that men’s health issues often do not receive the attention they deserve. As a part of our commitment to health equity, we aim to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment.

Why Men’s Health Matters

National Men’s Health Month encourages men of all ages to prioritize their health. Their well-being is vital for building healthier families and communities, and improved population health overall.

While men face some gender-specific health concerns — such as prostate cancer — most health conditions are the same as women’s, such as heart disease, diabetes and depression. However, women are twice as likely to see a doctor regularly.

Despite raising awareness of preventable health problems since 1992, statistics continue to show men die younger than women and have higher suicide rates.

Covered Preventive Services for Men

Sutter Health Plan members have access to a wide range of preventive services at no cost share, including:

  • Comprehensive preventive care visits and counseling
  • Colon cancer screening
  • Lung cancer screening
  • STI screenings
  • Hearing exams
  • Preventive imaging services and lab tests
  • Smoking cessation counseling and support
  • Vaccines and immunizations

Even if you feel healthy, schedule regular checkups. Many conditions are easiest to treat when caught early — often before symptoms appear.

Supporting Men’s Mental Health

Mental health is a key part of overall wellness. According to the Indiana University School of Medicine, 31% of men experience depression, but only 25% seek professional help. Be mindful of symptoms of depression or anxiety — and don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sutter Health Plan members have access to confidential, in-person or virtual visits through U.S. Behavioral Health Plan, California (USBHPC).

For 24/7 digital access to confidential, self-paced support for emotional, behavioral and mental wellness, members have access to AbleTo — a free app available through USBHPC — from the App Store or Google Play. On a computer, visit AbleTo.com/begin and select the Get Started button.
